Napa Valley, CA
„Napa“ is Native American word meaning „abundance“ or „fertile“. On 45.000 acres 600 wineries create under the best conditions fantastic wines. Although the valley has only a lenght of 30 and a width of 6 kilometers, there are 3 climates. South of Oakville it is cooler, North of Oakville up to St. Helena it’s warm and North of Calistoga it’s hot. During Summer, temperatures are around 30° Celcius, in Winter temperatures drop to 8° Celcius in average. Years with late frost can occur. The average rainfall is 60 cm per year. Tectonically, the valley is young; only about 150 million years ago it was „lifted“ out of the Sea. It is said that no wine region on Earth has such a complex soil composition like Napa. More and more also on the hill sides vines are being planted. Throughout the valley, the quality of the wines is ext-remely high. Napa is considered as the Californian Bordeaux. The main varietals are Caber-net Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Only 4% of the American production comes from this Valley.
Products from Cakebread Cellars
So einfach war es in den guten alten Zeiten: Jack Cakebread verbrachte 1973 ein Weekend im Napa Valley und erwähnte bei Freunden, dass er an einer eigenen Winery schon Freude hätte. Kaum nach Hause zurückgekehrt, klingelte das Telefon und er hatte einen verkaufswil-ligen Landbesitzer an der Strippe. Innerhalb einer Woche stand der Deal. Und heute ist diese Winery Kult pur. An den Weinmessen fragen uns immer wieder erstaunte Napa Kenner: "Waas ihr habt Cakebread?". Die Frage ist berechtigt. Wir mussten 10 Jahre anstehen, um als Distributoren akzeptiert zu werden. 70% der Produktion wird im Tasting Room verkauft. Nach Europa schaffen es nur wenige Flaschen.
