Mendocino is a Californian AVA, north of Sonoma and Napa Valley. On a surface of 8‘000 hectars there are 108 wineries. The first winemakers came 1850 from Italy. Today, about 20% of the production is biologically certified. 280 hectares do even have the Demeter standard. 1/3 of Californias cert. organic vineyars are in Mendocino. This AVA is known for its late ripening varietals like Carignan, Charbono, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Zinfandel.  In the cooler regions of the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is cultivated. The most important Subappellations are Hopland, Ukiah, Redwood Valley, Anderson Valley, Potter Valley and Yorkville Highlands.
