Long Island, North Fork, NY,

Would you have thought this? Only 50 miles off the Big Apple you will find a wine region in the North East of Long Island. The North Fork is the warmest region of NY State. The climate of course is maritime as both sides of the North Fork are washed by the Atlantic Sea. The ground consists mainly of clay and sand which gives a good drainage but limits quantity. The growing season is very long. Hot summer days profit from the ocean breeze which helps the grapes finding a perfect balance of acidity and fruit. The main varietals are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvigon, Merlot and Riesling. The appellation was founded in 1988 and is home of 38 wineries working on a surface ot 1200 hectares.
